Andrew Johann Salgado, born in Regina, Saskatchewan, graduated from the University of British Columbia in 2005 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and a minor in film studies. Andrew currently divides his time between Regina and Vancouver, working as a practicing artist in large scale, obsessively detailed acrylic paintings and pencil drawings.
Since 2000, his art has been featured in public and private exhibitions and collections throughout North America, including the United States and Mexico, earning him a reputation as one of Western Canada’s upcoming young artists. In December, 2005, Andrew will represent Canada in the Francophonie Games V in Niger, Africa, where he will compete internationally with other painters from around the world.
His work engages a multitude of themes and concerns, from analyzing mass-media culture and appropriating pop-culture iconicity, to elevating the banal and challenging conventional aestheticism. His ever-changing style is unexpected and unique, yet strikingly recognizable, and his subject matter explores his relationship to aspects that are at once personal and universal.
